4th grade students from EES on the ARDELLE out of Gloucester Harbor!

4th grade students learned a great deal on the Schooner Ardelle.  The relationship we have developed with Maritime Gloucester is proving to be a great one!

  • Owen learned that lobsters are very territorial and will fight a trespassing lobster.
  • Haley learned that if the bottom deck ever got filled with sea water, the Ardelle will still float because it was built to.
  • She also learned if you hum to a periwinkle it will come out of its shell.
  • Another student learned that in order to determine if a lobster is male or female, you must turn the lobster upside down and look under the tail.  If it feels hard it is a male, if it is soft, it is a female.
  • Jane learned how to drive the boat.
  • Ben and Parker learned that the rudder steers the boat.
  • Peyton learned that the thing in the front helps move the sails.
  • Claire said there is a camera under water.
  • Emily said there is more than one type of seagull.
  • Alex and Nick learned that otters are the hairiest animal with 300 hairs per square inch covering their bodies.
  • Colby said that seagulls have an oily raincoat that protects them from the cold water.
  • Jack said whales keep warm from their layer of blubber.
  • Emma learned how to hold a lobster so she does not get bit!
