Student Council and the new Duck House!!!

The Student Council learned about some ducks that return to the courtyard each year.  They decided wanted to make a house for them to stay safe.  The students looked at various designs and provided a few examples to Steve Hunt, who works in the MERSD maintenance department.  Steve built the house and delivered it to EES.  These are the proud Student Council members pictured with the new EES duck house.
Third grade student, Morgan Etna, wrote a poem about the famous EES ducks.  We are anxiously awaiting their arrival!

Third Grade Art Class!

Here are some pictures from the Cape Ann Museum visit yesterday.  Liza Browning came to work with the third graders in the art room and introduced them to the Folly Cove Designers.  She showed them how the Designers made different prints and then the students made their own prints.  She will be back on Friday to work with the third grade  students in their classrooms and talk with them about Virginia Lee Burton, who was also a Folly Cove Designer.

4th Grade Enrichment!

A group of Fourth Graders from Ms. Oland's class took on the challenge of creating a city. After making a long list of things they felt were important in a city, (both Essex, and their wild imaginations!) they began to research what makes up a city. The children found many statistics that informed their creation of the city. The students were given a scale and had to create their first draft from scratch. They practiced conversions of inches to feet to miles. They looked at zoning laws and where the features of their city should be. The children were asked many questions to further their inquiry. In turn they had many questions of their own. "What's a DPW?" "What is welfare? " "What's commercial zoning?" They thought  like researchers. The children created their own city council and worked together to produce a functioning city that they subtly named, "New Dork City." They will continue with mathematics projects to create specific buildings from the city.

Thank you to Mrs. Marchand for facilitating this great team work!
