Social Emotional Learning at EES!

Dr. Welling is teaching third graders about "social filters".  These lessons are a Tier I extension of learning from the small group lessons. Students learn about what thoughts should stay in their heads (a thought bubble) and Dr. Welling shares a book that supports this concept.  She has presented lessons on Whole Body Listening to kindergarten and grade one students, and a variety of other social-emotional lessons in the classrooms!

Martin Luther King Jr. was very inspirational to these 4th grade students

Students in Mrs. Kasmarcik's class read several picture books about Martin Luther King, Jr. and discussed who he was, what he did, and what he said. They watched a video of his I Have a Dream Speech. The students were enthralled. They then read a picture book version of his speech, and discussed the meaning behind the words. Finally, each student chose one of his quotes that was inspirational to them and wrote about how they can live his words in their lives.

Great lesson on diversity in kindergarten!

Here are some photos of our kindergarten diversity lesson. After reading about and discussing MLK, we watched a video of a read aloud of The Crayon Box that Talked. We talked about the similarities between people during MLK’s time and the crayons that argued and didn’t get along because they were different colors. In the end the crayons realized that all colors are needed to make a complete picture just like people today know that all of our differences and uniqueness help make the world an interesting and beautiful place!

So glad we did NOT have a snow day today!
