Teachers completed the DESSA screening assessment on all students in early October. This screener then prompts teachers to conduct a more in depth assessment on particular students based on the parameters we set for scores. The full DESSA assessment looks at competencies such as; self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, decision-making, optimistic thinking, relationship skills, goal-directed behavior, and personal responsibility.
At our fall data meetings, we reviewed assessment data in reading, math, and social emotional skills to determine which students might benefit from a second tier of instruction. Interventionists work with students in math and reading during WIN (what I need time) on a daily basis for approximately 10 weeks, with their progress being routinely monitored. Students selected for a social emotional skill group will meet once a week with Debi Welling, school psychologist, or in very specific cases, with Suzi South, school adjustment counselor. Classroom teachers reviewed their whole class data and determined one competency to work on with their class (Tier 1) throughout this 10 week period of time. They should be sharing this focus with you in their newsletters. The pictures in this blog post show classroom teachers meeting with specialists and special education teachers to share what their focus will be so that students can be supported in this particular area when they travel throughout the day. EVERYONE at EES is on board with supporting students social- emotional growth and development! |
